On Saturday, November 16, 2013 the Kansas Football Jayhawks broke their two plus year losing streak in conference play against the West Virginia Mountaineers. At the time the Hawks were 2-7. The Mountaineers were 4-6. It was a great game, started off a little scary when WV marched down the field on the opening drive, but everything turned out okay.
It was Cohen's first game - she was really excited. Boady, he's been to three now (Louisiana Monroe and Texas in 2012, and now WVU). They had a blast.
We started off sitting in section 11 but there were a few problems.
A) Two West Virginia fans were sitting in front of us. They complained about the refs constantly when they weren't stuffing sauerkraut covered hot dogs in their face.
B) Even worse, directly behind us was a know-it-all loudmouth who would not shut up. He was a KU fan but would call out "Pass" or "Run" directly after each snap, and then, when he was wrong (which was almost always) would explain how they Hawks should have run or should have passed, and that's what he meant.
So we moved to general admission.Which worked out better.
I like to take a picture of the kids with a name from the Jayhawks hall of fame. Last year it was the Sayers name. This year Mr Riggins.
Like I said, the game was great. The Hawks held on and won! Final score was 34-19, but it wasn't really even that close. At the end the students rushed the field, tore down the goal post, and threw it in Potters Lake.
But we didn't see that. We left with a few minutes left in the game. Partially, I admit, because I expected the game to be a blowout at halftime and that I'd leave in disgust. And partially because I didn't want to leave my wife at home with the baby all day long. And partially because, well, I guess I just don't have the same reverence for West Virginia football that most Jayhawk football fans do.
And partially because the kids were laying down on the bleachers. They were tired and it was time to go.
